Constable Charged with Sex Abuse Says He's Not Guilty
01/09/2012

Franklin County, AL - Ray Hill has served the Tharptown Community in Franklin County for nearly thirty years. As constable, the 79-year-old is an elected law officer who is not paid for his duties. Now, he's on the other side of the law, after a 17-year-old girl filed charges against him.

“The accusations basically just stated that there had been some inappropriate touching,” says Franklin County Sheriff, Shannon Oliver.

According to investigators, Hill is accused of taking the girl's hand and putting it near his genitals. The alleged victim went Franklin County Sheriff's office to file a report. The case was then handed over to the Alabama Bureau of Investigations.

Hill turned himself in at the Franklin County jail, but then posted his bond. He says the charges against him are false. “I'm a 79-year-old and what would a 79-year-old man do with a 17-year-old girl? No rightness to it,” he adds.

The incident allegedly occurred Monday night while Hill was directing traffic for a brush fire. He says there were two girls at the scene and he simply shook hands with both of them while he was in his car. “She shook hands and said, “it's real cold.” I said, “yes it is”. She said, “but, it's warm in the car.” I said “yeah it is.” She stuck her head in the car and, you know, shaking her hand and that's what happened,” says Hill.

Ray Hill is well known in Franklin County. Sheriff Shannon Oliver says he was shocked to hear the accusations. “It was shocking to me. Like I said, I've known him all my life. It's shocking,” he says.

Tech Guy : Prescription Pill Reminder
01/09/2012

Nashville, TN - There are surveys that suggest about half of all Americans don't take their medicine as prescribed by their doctor. And one of the biggest reasons : is they just forget. Leave it to online technology to remedy the problem.

An innovative new product from AT&T is supposed to help you remember.

It’s called a "Glow-Cap". You empty your pill bottle into a Glow-Cap bottle and schedule, on a computer, when you’re supposed to take your medicine. then, the Glow-Cap does something you can’t miss. A few things actually.

“This device, this pill bottle is connected to the AT&T wireless network." says AT&T Spokeswoman Cathy Lewandowski. "It will chirp, it will light up, it will send you a text message and even call a significant other to remind you when to take your medicine.”
And it works.. pretty dog gone well according to Jamey. There’s a nightlight type device that plugs into a wall outlet. When it’s time to take your medicine, the wall plug in lights up...and blinks at you.

And then the pill bottle starts glowing and blinking too. And it keeps chirping and blinking until you open the cap. If you still don’t get the message, the vitality Glow-Cap sends you a text message...saying “Hey... you’re not paying attention..take your medicine already." And you can set it up to call your home phone.

If you’re still not opening the bottle, a friend or a family member gets a text message that says “Hey... your buddy isn’t taking his medicine... might want to call him." And one more thing these Glow-Cap bottles will do. It knows when you need to order a re-fill and either reminds you, or call it in to the drug store.

It makes taking your medicine hard to forget. They’re especially designed with older, forgetful people in mind...but works well for anyone. the Glow-Caps aren’t being sold at retail stores, an AT&T spokesperson told me to get them, you’ll need to ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Pharmaceutical websites put the price on the Glow-Caps at $30 per bottle.

$822K Frozen in Lawrence County's Budget
01/09/2012

By Greg Privett

MOULTON, Ala. - Serious. But managable. That's how Lawrence County leaders are describing a legal bombshell to their budget: court action freezing county money.

It all started in 2008 with the firing of county payroll clerk Baronica Warren.

Inside the Steak and Biscuit Restaurant, we asked 3 generations of Moulton's Garrie family to give us their take.

"I don't think they had any justifiable reason to fire her," Joey Garrie told WAAY31 FirstNews. "It would have all been prevented if they hadn't fired the lady. She was in the right."

Last year, a federal judge agreed awarding Warren $822-thousand for gender-discrimination.

"I think that's a little far-fetched getting that kind of money awarded to her," Joey added. "I think a couple hundred thousand would have been fair enough."

The latest: courts have frozen the $822k in the county's bank accounts. Add attorney fees and the county stands to loose a tenth of its 14 million buck budget.

"Every dollar they waste is out of my pocket, too," Joe Garrie told us.

Just down Highway 157 from the restaurant, Lawrence County commissioners are trying to figure out how to deal with this burden to their budget. Meanwhile, taxpayers we talked with say they're the ones who are going to get hurt.

"That's what it comes down to," Joe said. "That's our money, you know. It's just like throwing it out the window."

Money intended to pay for county services like keeping deputies on the road.

"We've got roads in the county that's in rough shape," Lance Garrie told WAAY31.

Taxpayers like the Garries are already feeling the raw end of this deal.

"I think it would have been preventable if they hadn't fired her," Joey summed up. "That started the whole thing."

The county commission is asking the judge to reduce the award amount. Barring any other action, if that doesn't happen by February 3rd, the county must use the frozen funds to pay the full judgement.

Franklin County Constable Arrested
01/09/2012

Tharptown, AL - Franklin County Sheriff's investigators say they've arrested a constable from the Tharptown area, and charged him with sexual abuse.

Ray Hill was arrested Thursday, two days after the Alabama Bureau of Investigation began looking into allegations against him. The victim is reportedly a 17 year old girl.

Hill is free on bond tonight.

Animal Shelter Struggles After State Changes
01/09/2012

A new state law designed to make animal euthanasia more humane is having an unintended consequence.  On January 1, gas chambers became illegal at Alabama animal shelters, leaving many shelters struggling to afford the drug used for lethal injection.

Tommy Morson, director of the Colbert County Animal Shelter, said that he is having to come up with new ways to raise funds this year. He said that when they used the gas chambers it cost the shelter around $.75 to $1 per animal, but the new injection they are using now, is costing them around $6.

"I'm having to bring my people in at 7 a.m. to euthanize, so I'm having to also pay them overtime," said Morson.  "I need them in the field, and I can't have them in here at 10 a.m. having to put down an animal."

Right now the shelter is filled to capacity, with about 120 animals waiting to be adopted.  Unless larger numbers of animals are adopted, Morson said that he has no choice but to euthanize around 150 animals a month.

"A rescue group can say, no I don't have room. I can't take it.  We can't do that," said Morson.  "My doors are open to all unwanted animals, so we don't have the luxury of being a no kill shelter."
Morson said that the shelter plans to do more fundraisers and set up adoption places throughout the community in an effort to solve this problem.

"You're going to see a lot of our little containers out for donations, and we want people to stick dollar bills in them," said Morson.  "We need help.  When you help us, it's helping the animals because that's what we're here for, to help the animals and take care of them."

He said that the number one way to prevent animal euthanasia is to spay and neuter animals.  He added that people can help out by sending donations, adopting animals and volunteering at the shelter.

Arrest Made in Cemetery Vandalism
01/09/2012

Huntsville, AL - Madison County Sheriff's Deputies have made an arrest in connection with last week's reported vandalism at Valhalla Cemetery on Winchester Road.

Christina Carr of New Market has been charged with Desecration of a Venerated Object and Criminal Mischief. She's being held in the Madison County Metro Jail on $21,000 bond.

Investigators tell WAAY 31 that they got a tip from the public that led them to Carr. While questioning her, they reportedly found traces of marble from the mausoleum in her vehicle's headlight. "We’re looking at $25,000 plus worth of damage in there." said Madison County Chief Deputy Brent Patterson. "But we don’t know what the motive is. We don’t know what was in her mind but.. we’re looking into it and hopefully we’ll find out why she did it."

Obama Unveils Slimmed Down Military in New Budget Plan
01/09/2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is putting his personal stamp on a rejiggered Pentagon strategy for absorbing hundreds of billions of dollars in defense budget cuts.

In a rare appearance in the Pentagon press briefing room Thursday, the president announced that the military will be reshaped over time. The new policy will emphasize countering terrorism, maintaining a nuclear deterrent, protecting the U.S. homeland, and deterring and defeating aggression by any potential adversary.

Those are not new military missions, and Obama isn't announcing any new capabilities or defense initiatives. He's talking about a U.S. force that will retain much of its recent focus, with the exception of fighting a large-scale, prolonged conflict like the newly ended Iraq mission or the ongoing war in Afghanistan.

Huntsville Man Charged With Sex Abuse
01/09/2012

Huntsville, AL - Huntsville Police have arrested and charged a 21 year old man with Sexual Abuse of a Child Less than 12 Years Old.

21 year old Shane Millraney was taken into custody on Wednesday. Investigators say he engaged in sex acts with a 10 year old girl in December of last year. The alleged incidents happened at a home on the 5000 block of Montauk Tr. in Owens Cross Roads.

Millraney is being held in the Madison County Metro Jail without bond.

Alabama's 2011 Season in Review
01/09/2012

New Orleans, LA - It was neither shocking or amazing that the Crimson Tide opened the season on a "roll" with impressive wins at Kent State and Penn State. Little did we know that this would be the last time we would ever see Joe Paterno on the sidelines leading the Nitty Lions against Alabama.

Bama won 27-11 on September 10th, but Coach Saban was not about to gloat over the victory.
"We wanted to be aggressive today we wanted to attack" Saban said after the victory. "We weren't gonna win this game based on what the media thought or what the rankings where we had a tremendous amount of respect for Penn State, their team, their fans, this is a great atmosphere for college football."

It was so good that Alabama would use that momentum to blow right through North Texas 41-0 .

The 2nd ranked Tide dominated North Texas on both sides of the football. Alabama totaled 586 yards on offense as junior running back Trent Richardson and sophomore running back Eddie Lacey both notched new career-high rushing marks. Richardson finished the game with 167 yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns, while Lacy added 161 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns.

Next up the Tide would get a 38-14 win over Arkansas, for their 20th straight SEC conference opening victory.

That would lead up to Coach Saban meeting up with one of his former assistance Wil Muschamp on October 1st...Who is now the Head Coach at Florida.
This much anticipated meeting brought to some the allusion of Star Wars, with one reporter comparing Saban and Muschamp to Jedi Master and Padawan.. A reference that was ultimately lost on Muschamp.

He woke up after seeing those stars in the Tide's 38-10 whipping they laid down on Florida. Master Nick's squad followed that with a 34-0 beat down of Vanderbilt earning their 77th homecoming victory on a 4 touchdown performance day from A.J. McCarron.

After stepping up and over Ole Miss and Tennessee by scores of 52-7 and 37-6.. it was on to the game of the year. The LSU Tigers gave Alabama plenty of opportunities, but in the end, they fell 9-6 in overtime. The Tide's one and only loss of 2011.
Bama would get back to it's winning ways with easy wins over Mississippi and Georgia Southern setting up their revenge meeting with arch -instate rival Auburn. And this year the game was at the home of the War Eagle Tigers, and as Trent Richardson puts it ...It's ok to be good and be the enemy.

Alabama would blow out Auburn 42-14. The Tide finished the day with 397 yards of offense led by junior running back Trent Richardson who powered his way to a career-best 203 yards, making his case for the Heisman. And although he didn't win ...The big prize is in New Orleans and that's the one he wants to be remembered for.

Bowden No Longer a Wanted Man
01/09/2012

Former UNA head football coach, Terry Bowden, says he's cleared up that little legal matter that threatened to land him in jail.

In a statement from the University of Akron in Ohio, Bowden says he's paid the fine from a speeding ticket he got in South Alabama in July.

He was caught going 60 in a 35 mile per hour zone near the Florida line.

When he didn't show up in court, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Bowden says he wasn't trying to run from the law.

He says he simply forgot to pay the ticket.

BCS Merchandise Under Wraps
01/09/2012

Sporting goods stores across the Valley are gearing up for the BCS championship game between Alabama and LSU.

Academy Sports and Outdoors in Decatur has received nearly 60 boxes of BCS championship t-shirts and hats.

The store's manager says they expect a big crowd if the Crimson Tide grabs the title again. "We will sell out or come close. We have very enthusiastic fans and they support, so they will be out in numbers," says manager Steve Brannon.

If Alabama does win the championship Monday night, all Academy Sports and Outdoors locations will open immediately after the game ends.

Huntsville City Schools Reviewing Business Practices
01/09/2012

Huntsville, AL- After Dr. Casey Wardynski was appointed as the new Huntsville City
School’s superintendent, he appointed a new Chief Financial Officer, Frank Spinelli.
Spinelli has been working since August 2011 to seek out and close any financial gaps in the school system.

Dr. Wardynski says his number one goal as superintendent is to make the best use of tax payers' money. “The vast majority of the employees in Huntsville city schools are doing the exact right things. And we want the tax payers to have confidence that that is 100% of the people in Huntsville City Schools,” he said.

Spinellli implemented a review process in August using the Six Sigma method, a process that is used in many large corporations and businesses to improve financial effectiveness.
“We’ve uncovered some areas where we are not real pleased with internal controls,” said Wardynski.

The review showed that improvements need to be made in the areas of purchasing supplies and awarding contacts. “That’s sort of what I expected when I came in here in July, that there would be some revamping to do. And now we understand the degree
in which it needs to be done pretty well,” Wardynski said.

One case that was discovered involved an employee buying supplies from a business owned by a family member. “When you look at something and it doesn’t look right, then you have got to ask questions. The next step is determining how we are going to break up these activities so that no one person, or no set of persons, can both place
contacts, order parts and be in a position to benefit from that transaction….and God knows what after that,” said Wardynski.

The state ethics commission is going to look at the violations on its own behalf. In the meantime, Wardynski says, they are making the district put the right internal controls in place. He says practices that may have been going on for years, if not decades, will
be brought to a controlled structure.

Big Spice Bust In Jackson County
01/09/2012

Scottsboro, AL-Police make a huge Spice bust and its one of the biggest hauls in the history of Jackson County. Jackson County drug agents confiscated at least 500 packets of synthetic Marijuana. Two days after christmas, they raided a home in Bryant.

Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen says criminals have pretty much stopped selling from businesses. Now, they're finding other outlets. "Yeah obviously we are still seeing quite a bit of it out here, but it's slowed down a bit" Harnen said. "Most of our businesses are no longer selling it. We find some from time to time that are still selling. But now most of it is being done individually from residences and things like that now".

The Spice has a street value of twenty thousand dollars. So far, no arrests in the case. But, you can expect charges soon. Last November Alabama Governor made
selling Spice illegal in Alabama.

Governor Announces Improvements Planned for Shoals Road
01/09/2012

Governor Robert Bentley announced Friday afternoon that they will start a nearly $25-million dollar project to improve the area's infrastructure along Wilson Dam Road.

"When we have a seven lane highway that goes in to a two lane road, that's not very functional," said Bentley.  "And we need to fix it, and that's what we're going to do."

Wilson Dam Road is a North-South corridor connecting Highway 157 to Florence and ultimately Tennessee.  When the six lane bridge was built and parts of the road expanded to seven lanes, it still left the road from Avalon Avenue to 157 in Muscle Shoals in two lanes, causing bottle neck traffic and accidents.

"We just felt that the limited amount of money that we have should be put in the parts of the state that are most important," said Bentley.  "And especially to finish projects that have been promised, so that's what we're doing with this project."

The project will take place in two different phases over the next four years.  Phase One will cost around $14-million and take two years.  Phase Two will cost $6-million and will take another two years to complete.

A bid is already in the works to purchase the right of way to begin the project.

Official U.S. 'Rape' Definition Now Includes Men
01/09/2012

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - For the first time since the 1920's, the Federal Justice Department has expanded and modernized its definition of rape.

The old definition of rape applied only to women. Now it'll also apply to men, and rape will include other forms of penetration.  The new definition will be used for FBI statistics.  The goal is to compile more accurate numbers and types of rapes.

However, this definition won't be used to prosecute rape cases in most courtrooms.  We spoke with Madison County District Attorney Rob Broussard, who says this is because Alabama lawyers go by state law in non-federal court.

Still, these new statistics may benefit non-profits, like Crisis Services of North Alabama, that help sexual assault victims.  Crisis Services Executive Director Janet Gabel says, “It will help us with our prevention efforts regarding maybe targeting a different group that we're not targeting right now."

Gabel adds that another benefit of the expanded definition is giving more victims a greater sense of validity, helping them cope.

In terms of reporting these statistics, some police agencies are ahead of the new definition.  Madison Police Major Lee Weaver says her department already breaks down each of these crimes into sub-categories.  That will make for an easy transition to the new FBI requirements.

High End Bama Merchandise Flying Off Shelves
01/09/2012

Tuscaloosa, AL - Alabama football, and Alabama sports in general are big business and not just in the Yellow Hammer State.

Tuscaloosa retailers say they get orders for their high-end merchandise from all over the world-thanks to the internet. With one national football championship and a run for another one in less than 3 years-it's making a big difference for small businesses.

Charles Spurlin has owned The Shirt Shop in Tuscaloosa for 30 years. He pays royalties to the University of Alabama to sell his elephant designs on everything from shirts and wallets, to pants, belts and boxers. His trademarked elephant costs him money, but it makes him money too. "We're just adapting to the market" Spurlin tells WAAY 31's Erin Dacy. He says customers are looking for something more than just a t-shirt to wear on Saturdays. They're demanding classy Alabama merchandise they can wear with pride in the office during the work week too. "It's not just gameday wear, it's everyday wear."

Gene Poole has owned Hudson Poole jewelers for several years. He's also following the money by changing his store offerings to meet customers' demands. He and Spurlin give a lot of credit to Alabama's winning head football coach - Nick Saban. "The Saban effect is tremendous. Alabama sports is tremendous, and I think people don't understand the ripple effect of that."

"The whole nation has just bought into the Saban program and saying that I mean, people are wanting to wear the crimson color. They're wanting to wear houndstooth, and they're wanting to wear it every day." Waterford crystal created 5,000 crystal footballs for the 2009 championship. At almost 200 dollars apiece, Poole says there was a waiting list for an eventual sellout. "They'll do another one for this year, for the National Championship, so I hope to have bookends."

A Family Divided
01/09/2012

Huntsville, AL-

Wes Neighbors is packing his car and zipping up his bags for the Alabama-LSU game.

Neighbors was raised an Alabama fan. He and his dad even played for the Crimson Tide.

“This game has a lot of significance to us,” Neighbors said.

But this year Neighbors isn’t packing any red-and-white or purple-and-yellow. He has to remain neutral.

His son Connor is a fullback for LSU and his other son, Wesley, is a student assistant coach for Alabama.

“This will be our forth national championship ring. We are going to win one either way this time,” Neighbors laughed.

Even as a lifelong Bama fan, Neighbors says he really can’t pick a team to pull for Monday night.

“When they play each other I find myself pulling for both teams at different times depending on who is getting the ball. It’s a shame that one of them has to lose.
Usually if Alabama gets beat I’m devastated, but I wouldn’t be devastated, I’ll be happy for them (if LSU wins),” said Neighbors.

Neighbors wishes both his sons could be happy at the end of Monday’s game, but it just can’t happen.

“One of my sons is going to get beat, and be devastated about getting so close. It’s going to be interesting to watch.

I guess I’m going to go to the losers lock room and hug that one first.

The face-off will air Monday night on ESPN.

Ski Resort In Dekalb County Praying For Colder Weather
01/09/2012

Mentone, AL-Alabama's only ski resort is looking for some help from mother nature. The unseasonable warm temperatures are causing problems for the Dekalb County ski resort business.

Workers at the Cloudmont Ski Resort in Mentone are praying for colder weather. The slopes are empty because its too warm to make snow.
Marsha Hair is the ski lodge manager. She's hoping all the machines will soon be making snow and customers will be lining up to rent chalets and motel rooms and hitting the slopes. "It's real hard it's real hard, we need to pay the bills like everybody else" Hair said. The resort has eleven snow making machines, but workers can't make
the power snow until the temperature drops to 28 degrees or colder.

It was a totally different story last year. More then seven thousand skiers came and strapped on their skis and snow boards looking for a good time. Because it's been so warm, this business is losing business. "It's been very frustrating because we have lots of people that depend on us in Mentone and it helps having income coming in during winter" Hair said.

Cloudmont offers two one thousand foot slopes with a ski lift. The ski season is from December until March.

A&M Water Study All Washed Up
01/09/2012

Say "contaminated water" and nearly everyone in the small town of Triana jumps. That's because more than forty years ago, the EPA found dangerous levels of DDT, a known cancer causing chemical, in the town's water supply. Even the CDC got involved and found residents with high levels of the chemical in their bloodstream.

So when Alabama A&M released a report saying that Triana tap water showed high levels of lead and other synthetic chemicals. It said the levels of the contaminents have carcinogenic potential. The reaction around town wasn't surprising.

The phone at the Triana Municipal Building rang off the hook all day Friday with people frightened about what's in their water. But according to town officials, if A&M researchers really did find dangerous carcinogens in the water here, then it's also in the water across the Tennessee Valley.

City officials say the water is pumped to Triana by Huntsville Utilities. Town employee Betty Haynes says, "If something is wrong with our water, Huntsville's water is bad too. And Madison. All of our water comes from the same place."

With these kinds of serious implications, we put in a call to officials at Alabama A&M. It turns out, the research findings they publicized this week should have been watered down.

Wendy Kobler, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at A&M says, "Basically no conclusions should be drawn from what we reported. This was a very small sample that was taken. These are not absolute findings nor are they conclusive results." Kobler insists, "The water is safe."

UAH Hockey, Roy Shock No. 10 Denver
01/09/2012

DENVER, Colo. – Mac Roy scored the game-winner with 2:41 remaining left in the game, Clarke Saunders made 41 saves, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team picked up an impressive road win as it defeated No. 10 Denver on Friday night 3-2. The Chargers move to 2-21-1 on the season, and Denver falls to 10-8-3.

The teams appeared to be headed toward overtime with the score tied at 2-2 late in the game, but the Chargers had different ideas as Jaime Easton fed it to Roy who put it past reigning WCHA Defensive Player of the Week Juho Olkinuora to pick up his second goal of the game and put the visitors on top.

UAH then withstood Denver's final flurry of chances to pick up the win.

After falling behind 2-0 after the hosts struck twice within a span of just over four minutes midway through the opening period, the Chargers were able to cut their deficit in half as Justin Cseter scored an unassisted goal at 16:18 of period to make the score 2-1 after the first 20 minutes.

The goal marked the second of the year for Cseter and moved him into second on the team in points with eight.

The score remained that way through much of the middle period until Roy picked up his first goal of the night at 16:49 to pull the Chargers into a 2-2 tie. Picking up the assists on the play were Jeff Vanderlugt and Graeme Strukoff.

The pair of goals made Roy the team's leading goal scorer on the year, and he pulled into a tie with Kyle Lysaght with nine points.

It was no matter on this night that the Chargers were outshot 43-20 as Saunders turned away the 41 shots to keep his team in position to win on the late strike. UAH also puts itself in a good spot as it continued its strong showing on the penalty kill, allowing Denver just one goal on six tries with the man-advantage.

The Chargers have now killed off 16 of their opponents last 18 tries on the power play.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday with the opening faceoff scheduled for 8:07 CST.

Major Bama Merchandise Site Runs Out of DeKalb County
01/09/2012

Crossville, AL - If you're the kind of fan who wants something "Bama" that not everyone else has, there's a website for that.

It's an auction website that is a pretty well kept secret - until now! It's so good, Erin didn't want to tell too many people about it, because their inventory is not something you can buy in any store, and can even be one-of-a-kind.

We're talking about RollTide.com. It's an auction site run in a partnership between Lear Field Auctions, CBS and the University of Alabama athletic department. The guy who runs it is from north Alabama! Crossville to be exact; in Dekalb County.

"I mean these are authentic football jerseys, softball jerseys, baseball. Anything you want." says rolltide.com's Tyler Keys. "These are player-issued things, so these, so it's a great thing for fans to be able to purchase these things through the rolltide.com website"
If it's autographed merchandise you're after… "This is an authentic men's #10 Bart Starr jersey. It has the SEC patch, the Nike check, the emblem on the neck, so Super Bowl winner in the NFL, legend among Alabama quarterbacks... Then here's a prized possession, first Heisman winner Mark Ingram. You can't find this in any stores. You can find the replica jerseys, but this is authentic as it comes right there."

Tyler is a dyed in the wool Bama fan himself, so he knows what fans really like. He's already put in a request to get the Gatorade coolers and kicking tees that will be used in the National Championship game here in New Orleans.

Butler Alum Lacey leads Alabama over Georgia
01/09/2012

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Freshman Trevor Lacey (Butler High School, Huntsville) scored a career-high 19 points, all but two of those in the first half, in leading Alabama to a 74-59 win over Georgia on Saturday night in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Freshman Kentavious Caldwell-Pope also had a career night for Georgia (9-6, 0-1) with 22 points.

Alabama (12-3, 1-0) got 17 points from Tony Mitchell, who had a big Swainsboro, Ga., cheering section watching. Trevor Releford added 12 for the Crimson Tide.

Lacey outdid his previous career-best of 12 points with 17 first-half points as Alabama led 38-26 at intermission.

Caldwell-Pope led a second-half rally by Georgia, which closed to within four on Donte Williams' stuff tip of his own miss, making it 52-48 Alabama with 9:20 to play.

But Alabama went on a 12-2 run over the next 4 ½ minutes, capped by Mitchell's three-point play with 5:00 to go, to lead 64-50.
